Working Principle

The term ‘inductance’ refers to the ability of a component to store a magnetic field due to the electrical current it has. This is the key principle behind the fixed inductor where electric current flowing through the inductor creates a magnetic field around the wire coil which is then used to inhibit or enable a current’s flow, depending on its polarity.

When the electric current enters the inductor, a varying magnetic field is created and this changing field induces a current in the coil in the opposite direction, thereby resisting the flow of the incoming current. In simpler terms, when the current flows into the inductor, some of the energy is transformed into the magnetic field that builds up around the coil and as that field builds, it resists the current’s flow.
