Circuit Board Indicators & LED Arrays

LEDs are one of the most popular forms of illumination used in electronics today. A circuit board indicator is a small, raised component which is illuminated by a light emitting diode (LED). For example, a continuous LED light bar can be used to display the temperature in an environment. This is done by programming individual LEDs to light up to match the temperature being measured.

Bar graphs are similar to light bars, but they display an individual LED for each unit of the data being measured. Each LED is programmed so that it lights up to represent a unit of data, such as the temperature or voltage. Bar graphs are often used to display complex data such as signal strengths or audio frequencies.

Working Principle

LEDs are composed of a small piece of semiconductor material, usually gallium arsenide or gallium phosphide. When a voltage source is connected to the LED, electrons will move from the n-type material to the p-type material, releasing energy in the form of light in the process. By controlling the size of the voltage applied to the diode and the amount of current it carries, the brightness level of the LED can be adjusted.

In circuit board indicators and large arrays of LEDs, each single light is controlled by its own individual circuit. This circuit consists of the LED, a current limiting resistor and a control switch, which is connected to a voltage source and can be used to turn the LED off and on. In light bars and bar graphs, multiple LEDs are grouped together and controlled in parallel by a single circuit. These circuits typically contain several LEDs, a current limiting resistor, and a voltage source.

LEDs are ideal for circuit board indicators, arrays, light bars, and bar graphs due to their long life spans and energy-efficiency. They are also relatively inexpensive and readily available, which makes them a great choice for a wide range of applications. By utilizing the correct circuit design and components, LED indicators can be easily and inexpensively incorporated into any existing device or component.
