Such sockets are designed to support a specific type of IC package. The second application field is for connecting transistors. Transistors are very useful in various applications such as amplifying or switching electronic signals and as voltage controllers. The third application field is for connecting other electrical components such as resistors, capacitors and LEDs. Sockets for ICs and transistors come in two main types, namely soldered sockets and PCB mount sockets. Soldered sockets are designed to be soldered directly onto the PCB while PCB mount sockets are designed to be clamped onto the PCB.
