Oscillators: 591BC200M000DG Application Field and Working Principle

Oscillators are basic circuits which can generate a repeating wave using energy stored in the form of electric charge. The 591BC200M000DG Oscillator chip is an example of such circuits created by Silicon Labs and is used as a time base in many micro-controller applications, where it provides a stable and predictable time base signal for the rest of the circuit.The 591BC200M000DG is a silicon-oxide based oscillating integrated circuit (IC) chip. It is designed for embedded electronic applications where ultra low-power operations are required. It is manufactured in the BiCMOS process and features a low-power oscillation circuit capable of generating up to 5MHz of output frequency at a supply voltage as low as 3V.The 591BC200M000DG oscillator chip works using a feedback circuit that operates in a closed loop. This feedback circuit has two complimentary MOSFET transistors. The N-MOSFET transistor serves as the output driver while the P-MOSFET is used as a compensation device. The 591BC200M000DG uses an internal 500kHz oscillator core with an adjustable frequency range of 0-5MHz. This is managed by an external voltage.When the voltage is applied to the oscillator input, the voltage prospective of the internal current source and the ground is turned off, turning off the N-MOSFET and opening the P-MOSFET which in turn transfers the output signal to the ground level. This output signal is then amplified and inverted by the N-MOSFET, and the cycle will keep going until the voltage reaches the current source. By monitoring the voltage of the oscillator input, the output can be adjusted to the desired frequency.The small size of the 591BC200M000DG makes it particularly suitable for embedded applications where size and power consumption are major factors. It can be found in many applications including micro-controllers, time base controllers, clock generators, frequency counters, low-power PET data processing and timing.The 591BC200M000DG is a highly versatile, reliable and low-cost solution for low-power applications and due to its small size, high frequency operation and low power consumption, it serves as a reliable time base in many micro-controller applications.
