Rotary Switches

Construction and Operation

The 608-5 rotary switch consists of a stationary contact plate and two rotors which can be seen as two concentric disks. The contact plate has five points or contacts which can be connected to multiple movable contacts on the rotors. When the handle is operated, the outer rotor rotates, and the inner rotor moves in the same direction but at a slower rate. This causes the movable contacts of the rotor to contact and disconnect from the contact points of the contact plate. This is the basic working principle of the switch.

The 608-5 switch is a single-pole, four-position device with a specified torque of 1.5 lb-in (16.7 N-m). Its dimensions are 2.800 x 2.050 x 3.200 inches (71 x 52 x 81 mm) with a temperature range from -40°C to +125°C. The standard voltage rating for this switch is 600 VAC (and 250 VDC) with an insulation resistance rating of 100 MΩ minimum at 500 VDC.
