FFC, FPC (Flat Flexible) ConnectorsFlat flexible connectors (FFCs) and flat printed circuits (FPCs) are used in electronic equipment to provide flexible, low-profile, and lightweight interconnect options for devices such as data processing and communications systems, consumer electronics, and medical devices. FFCs and FPCs allow for quick and easy connection between components and printed circuit boards, replacing complicated soldered wire harnesses and bulky ribbon cables. They help to reduce traditional mechanical assemblies to more compact, cost-saving options. The FFCs and FPCs are designed to link two mating surfaces together by way of a stainless steel flexible flat cable (FFC) or a flat printed circuit (FPC) with copper conductive traces. The flexible flat cable is a unit composed of two layers of substrate joined together by two copper wires, which allow for a wide range of applications. The flat printed circuit is similar but uses an etched copper conductor rather than a single copper wire for increased transmission speed and reliability.The construction of both FFCs and FPCs consists of an electrically insulated, bi- or tri-layer, polymeric film containing the copper conductive traces. The outer two layers are typically composed of a polyester film while the inner (if applicable) layer is a polyimide or other dielectric material. Through holes, or “vias”, are laser drilled through the insulation and etched contacts are created by plating through holes with metal. The circuit traces, composed of copper, silver, or gold, are then established on the surface of the board. The difference between FFCs and FPCs lies in the connecting mechanism. FFCs are typically secured with zero force contacts which create secure electrical connections without exerting any pressure on the mating surfaces. FPCs use a conductive tongue force contact which provides a strong, consistent connection. Ready-made, standard products are available for both FFCs and FPCs, though custom-made solutions are also available. The ready-made solutions are usually limited to selecting the proper board-to-board stack height and the width of the board.The most common applications for FFCs and FPCs are for data processing and communications applications, consumer electronics, automotive wiring, and even medical applications. FFCs can be used for linking electrical components in the automotive industry, such as the fuel gauge or parking brake system. FPCs are commonly used in medical devices such as patient-monitoring systems, prosthetic devices, and surgical robots.Finally, FFCs and FPCs also allow for the use of thinner cables which are more flexible and require less space. This in turn leads to several benefits such as better heat dissipation, increased circuit mobility, better vibration and flexural fatigue resistance, better maintenance, and reduced production costs. By comparison, traditional multi-conductor connectors require large connectors which are bulky and difficult to work with. The application and working principle of FFCs and FPCs provide for a wide range of uses and versatile solutions for many industries and applications.
