Bridge rectifiers are a type of diode, specifically designed to convert AC current to DC current. Bridge rectifiers are common in many applications, ranging from home appliances to electronic devices. This paper will discuss the general application fields and working principles of the common type 682-3 bridge rectifier.

Uses of Bridge Rectifiers

Bridge rectifiers are used in many industries, from automotive to electronics. Some of their primary functions include:

  • Rectifying the AC voltage from a wall outlet for powering many types of electronics
  • Converting the AC voltage from a power tool for DC power for its motor
  • Rectifying the AC current from a motor for measuring its speed
  • Providing DC voltage from an AC generator
  • Filtering the input signal of a PLC
  • Inverters and Variable Frequency Drives

In medical applications bridge rectifiers are used to convert AC to DC power for medical devices. They are also used in switching power supplies, inverters, and other electronic equipment. Bridge rectifiers have become an essential component in home appliance manufacturing, due to the growing demands for safety and reliability.

682-3 Bridge Rectifier

The 682-3 bridge rectifier is a common bridge rectifier type. It consists of four diodes arranged in a bridge configuration. The bridge rectifier diode configuration has three terminals:

  • Positive (marked +): the positive output of the rectifier
  • Negative (marked -): the negative output of the rectifier
  • Common (marked C): the common terminal of the rectifier

The 682-3 bridge rectifier is rated at 800V and is capable of handling up to 2A. It has a response time of 10µs and a soft-recovery characteristic, meaning the output voltage will rise gradually when switching from AC to DC.

Working Principle

The basic principle behind a bridge rectifier is the principle of “reverse current flow”. When the positive output voltage is positive and the negative output voltage is negative, the current will flow from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. This is due to the fact that the p-type semiconductor of the diode will be forward biased, and the n-type semiconductor will be reverse biased. However, when the positive output voltage is negative and the negative output voltage is positive current will flow from the positive terminal to the negative terminal. This is due to the fact that the p-type semiconductor will be reverse biased and the n-type semiconductor will be forward biased.

In a bridge rectifier the four diodes form a bridge, so that the current will always flow from the negative output terminal to the positive output terminal, regardless of the polarity of the input voltage. This means that when the input voltage is AC, the output will be DC. The rectified voltage is equal to the peak amplitude of the input voltage multiplied by the square root of two (1.4142).

One of the advantages of bridge rectifiers is that they are more efficient than traditional half-wave rectifiers. This is due to the fact that bridge rectifiers rectify both halves of the input voltage, while half-wave rectifiers only rectify one half of the input voltage. This results in a higher output voltage and increased efficiency.

Due to their popularity and reliable performance, 682-3 bridge rectifiers can be found in a variety of applications, from home appliances and motor control to medical equipment and power supplies. They are an essential component for any device that requires the conversion of AC to DC and reliable performance.
