Optical sensors are used for measuring light, temperature, distance, angular position and other physical parameters. They are widely used in various industrial applications, such as automotive, optics, lighting, manufacturing, testing and monitoring, biomedical research, security, and optical inspection. In this article, we shall discuss the application field and working principles of the two commonly used optical sensors - Photoelectric and Industrial.

Photoelectric Sensors

Photoelectric sensors are mainly used in industrial automated systems such as machine vision, robotics, automated flow control, sorting, and picking. These sensors use either visible or infrared light sources to detect objects and can be classified according to the type of sensing element used - such as photodiode, phototransistor, and photomultiplier. Photoelectric sensors can also be classified according to the nature of the response (pulsed, continuous, etc.) or wavelength (ultraviolet, visible, or infrared).

A photoelectric sensor typically consists of four components - a light source, photoelectric sensing element, control module, and an output device. The light source emits a beam of photons that are reflected off of the object to be detected. The sensing element detects the reflected light and sends an electrical signal to the control module, which then processes the signal and sends an electrical output to the output device. This output triggers a specific action or response that is programmed into the sensor.

A special type of photoelectric sensor, known as a time-of-flight (TOF) photoelectric sensor, is used to measure the distance between an object and a sensor. TOF photoelectric sensors work by timing how long it takes a beam of light to travel between an object and a sensor. By measuring the time-of-flight, the sensor can calculate the precise distance between the two points.

Industrial Sensors

Industrial sensors are used for specific measurements in automated industrial processes - sensing pressure, temperature, flow, vibration, torque, displacement, and more. These sensors have various applications in the areas of production, process control, and quality control for ensuring accuracy, precision, speed, and safety of operations. Industrial sensors can be divided into four main categories - mechanical, electrical, chemical, and optical.

The optical sensor category includes photoelectric, infrared, laser, and ultrasonic sensors. Photoelectric sensors detect objects by sending a beam of light and measuring the reflection from the object. Infrared sensors use infrared light to measure distance, position, or temperature. Laser sensors are used to measure extremely precise positions by using laser light. Ultrasonic sensors measure the distance between objects using sound waves.

In particular, the type of optical sensor that we shall discuss in this article is the 70156-2398 optical sensor. This type of sensor is used for making precise measurements of angular displacement, linear displacement, and velocity. The 70156-2398 is a dual-axis sensor that combines both two-dimensional displacement sensing and angular rate sensing in a single unit. It combines two individual sensing elements with a low profile form factor that minimizes installation space and weight. The two-dimensional displacement sensing element uses light-emitting diodes and a light sensitive detector to detect small changes in the angular orientation of the sensor.

The angular rate sensor measures the rate of rotation along two perpendicular axes, X and Y. The sensor detects angular velocity by detecting the Doppler shift in the frequency of light generated by a laser light source and received by a photosensor. The purpose of the angular rate sensor is to provide a direct and accurate measure of the angular velocity of the sensor.

In conclusion, optical sensors have a wide range of application fields for both industrial and scientific purposes. The commonly used optical sensors are photoelectric and industrial sensors, with the latter including 70156-2398 optical sensors. Both of these types of sensors work by measuring the amount of light given off or received from an object, and each type is used for a specific purpose. Photoelectric sensors are used mainly for industrial applications, while industrial sensors, such as the 70156-2398, are used for more precise measurement of angular displacement, linear displacement, and velocity.
