Optical Sensors – Photoelectric, Industrial
- Application Field
- Working Principle
Optical Sensors are widely used in a variety of industrial applications such as process control, safety and security, vision systems, inventory control, motion control and robotic positioning. They are also used in many medical, automotive, military, and environmental systems, among others. Photoelectric sensors, also known as “phototransistors,” are used to detect objects by producing a beam of light that is reflected off of the object. Working within its range, a light source on one side of the sensor emits a beam of light, and the reflected light is then sensed by a photoelectric sensitive detector on the other side of the sensor. These sensors can be used to detect objects that come into contact with them, or when a beam of light is broken.
Industrial grade optical sensors are used in many applications. They can be used in safety applications to detect threats, such as when a vehicle or object is approaching a dangerous area. These sensors can also be used in vision systems to help robots or machines detect objects in their environment. In inventory control systems, these sensors can be used to detect the quantity of products in a given area. Motion control systems also utilize optical sensors to help machines accurately move and position objects in a desired position or area.
When light is directed into an optical sensor, the light passes through the sensor, whether it’s a single element or a compound lens. The light then projects an image onto the sensitive detector mounted on the backside of the sensor. This detector is usually a photodiode or a light detector. When the light reaches the detector, it generates a signal in the form of voltage or current. This voltage or current is then processed by the sensor’s circuitry and is converted into a digital signal that can then be used by the system it is connected to.
The way that the optical sensors detect objects is similar to how human eyes work. Human eyes use specialized cells to process the light that enters them, and the same holds true for optical sensors. The range of the sensor depends on the characteristics of the light source, the materials used to construct the sensing element and the selection of the detector. These sensors normally work within a range of 100 millimeters to 1 meter, and are able to detect objects at almost any angle.
Optical sensors are typically classified as Photoelectric or Industrial. Photoelectric sensors detect objects using a beam of light or a change in the intensity of the light, while Industrial grade sensors are designed for industrial applications such as process control, safety, security, motion control and robotic positioning.
