Toggle Switches

A toggle switch is an electrical device used to turn on, off, or change the circuit state of an electric appliance. Toggle switches often come in single-pole single-throw (SPST), single-pole double-throw (SPDT), double-pole double-throw (DPDT), or triple-pole double-throw (3PDT) configurations. SPST toggle switches are the simplest variety. They consist of a switch mechanism and two terminals to create an on/off state.

Depending on the state of the switch, either the left or the right terminal will be connected to the common terminal.

When the switch is in the up position, the current will flow from the left actuating terminal to the common terminal. When the switch is in the down position, the current will flow from the right actuating terminal to the common terminal. As the switch is manually pressed or pulled throughout its range of motion, the contact between the actuating terminals and the common terminal will alternate accordingly.
