71609-406ALF is a high-performance profile interconnect system from 3M intended for use in commercial and certain industrial applications. Its configuration includes few female sockets which are used to create rectilinear interfaces between multiple devices. It is developed for power, as well as signal or data transmission in areas with limited board space. With its design, 71609-406ALF can be mounted for different applications due to its superior high-temperature range and modularity. Furthermore, it alleviates board-level design pressure and optimizes the power/data/ground channels, thereby simplifying the overall routing strategy.

Working Principle:

The 71609-406ALF connector system consists of two major components – headers and receptacles. The header, which is the male connector, consists of a push-on receptacle and mating pin to interface with a compatible receptacle. The receptacle is the female part of the cable connector host, and houses the pins that contact with the header pins. The header is attached to the PCB by either solder or pressure-lock clips. The header pins on other devices are inserted into the corresponding PCB mating pin row and secured using a retaining clip. This clip holds all the pins in place to ensure solid connections and reliable contact with the mating pins.

Each pin on the header has two bevels – one at each end. The first bevel helps in aligning two interconnects. At the same time, a second bevel ensures that the pins don’t come out even when a small force is applied. The contacts are made with precision-machined pins that are tightly held in place by an elastomer sleeve opening. This ensures superior electrical performance over a wide range of current ratings. Furthermore, 71609-406ALF also provides a low-impedance connection due to its gold and nickel alloy plating.
