FIFO (First-In-First-Out) memory, also known as first-in-first-out memory, is a type of logic memory structure in which data items or components put in the first-in-position are the first to be returned when data items or components are read out from the memory. FIFO memory is widely used in many applications as a way of storing and retrieving data in an efficient and orderly fashion.The 7203L40DB is a FIFO memory component that is widely employed in embedded system platforms for a range of data storage and retrieval operations. The component is more popularly known as the L40DB, which is its registered name and a shortened notation for its full technical title - the 7203L40DB First-In-First-Out Memory.The 7203L40DB boasts a small package size and a maximum data storage capacity of 64K (Kilo bytes) of dynamic random access memory (DRAM). This small size, large capacity and flexibility, makes it an ideal component to be used in most applications such as web-browsing, communication and streaming audio/video, as well as even in more mission-critical applications such as databases or even soft- or hardware-controlled robotic systems.In order to understand its working principle, it helps to take a closer look at the component\'s architecture. The L40DB consists of two slots - the FIFO write port and the FIFO read port - each comprising of a data bus, an address bus and a couple of control lines. The FIFO write port is used for writing data into the memory, whereas the FIFO read port is used for reading it from the memory.At a high level, the L40DB uses a simple design in which data is written to the write port and is read from the read port. In order to make a write transfer, the address and data values are sent to the write port, along with one of the control lines, which is used to indicate a write direction to the memory. Once the write has been completed, the memory then increments the data address and the process is repeated until all the data has been written.In a similar fashion to the write process, the read process consists of sending an address and control line to the read port. Once the address has been received, the memory then reads out the data at that address and increments the address, before repeating the process until the read is complete.The L40DB also includes a status bit, which indicates which port - either the write or the read port - has been designated to be active at any particular time. This status bit is referred to as the FIFO-State bit, which can have one of four states (Unfilled, Filled, Empty or Full) indicating the status of the FIFO memory.Finally, the L40DB also includes a self-resetting reset switch, which resets the memory\'s status bit - and thereby the FIFO memory itself - back to the Unfilled state. This reset switch comes in handy for occasions when the memory needs to be reset without the need for software intervention.Overall, the 7203L40DB FIFO memory component is designed to be highly compact, efficient and easy-to-use. With its small package size and large 64K of data storage capacity, the component makes a fantastic addition to any embedded system platform or application, making it an excellent option for a range of applications leveraging FIFO memory structures.
