74ABT646CSCX is a CMOS logic IC with universal bus transceivers, designed to recognize two different BTL types: one with logic-low input and output voltage and the other with logic-high input and output voltage. The chip features two separate data buffers, allowing flexibility in data directions and it is ideally used in multi-application systems requiring high-speed and high-efficiency data transmissions. It is also used in point-to-point interface applications such as RS-232 transceivers and low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) transceivers, since the single chip operates at speeds up to 2 Mbps.

The 74ABT646CSCX operates as a universal bus transceiver by converting data from one level to the other. The low voltage BTL (L-BTL) type operates from a single-ended input to a single-ended output or from a differential input to a single-ended output, while the high voltage BTL (H-BTL) type operates from a single-ended input to a differential output or from a differential input to a differential output. An external voltage on the VCCA pin controls the level conversion: when VCCA is less than VCCO3, the device operates in L-BTL mode; otherwise, in H-BTL mode.

The 74ABT646CSCX features two separate tri-state buffers: The first buffer (C1) is used for data transmission, while the second buffer (C2) is used for a separate control line in order to enable the transceiver. Each buffer has two input pins, two output pins, and one enable pin that controls the transceiver state. The two buffers can be configured for different applications since the control logic signals for the two buffer exhibit OR, AND, or XOR functions.

The device also includes an enable pin and two buffer enable pins (C1E, C2E). When the enable pin is low, both buffers are disabled and data input is ignored. The C1/C2 enable pins will disable the respective buffers when it is low. If the enable pin is high, the transceiver is enabled and data transmission is possible. In addition, the chip provides logic-level translation for voltage levels applied to the various pins.

For applications requiring two-way data transmission, two 74ABT646CSCX ICs must be used, one for the transmitter (TX) and one for the receiver (RX). Each of the ICs has two buffers, allowing flexibility in data directions. The chip uses Schmitt triggers to sense L-BTL and H-BTL logic levels recommended for data transmission. The device is designed to meet the electrical requirements of LVTTL, but also has output compatibility with SSTL, LVCMOS and PCI levels.

The 74ABT646CSCX is widely used in memory controller, router, switch, backplane, point-to-point interface, and ADC/DAC interfaces applications. It is also used in RS-232 transceivers and LVDS transceivers for high-speed, low-power operation. The chip can operate at speeds up to 2 Mbps and operates from a single 3.3V or 5V power supply.
