The 74HC164D14 is a shift register dedicated to the logic family. This device is composed of 8 D-type flip-flops with an extended frequency range of 0.8 to 10 MHz. It belongs to the 74HC164 family and cuts down the power consumption levels of its predecessor, the 74HC164, by significantly reducing the maximum supply current.

This shift register can be used in two ways: non-inverting data or inverting data. In non-inverting data, the data is not inverted upon external clock trigger; whereas in inverting data, the data is inverted upon trigger. The operating temperature range for the 74HC164D14 is 0°C to 70°C.

The application field of the 74HC164D14 spans from industrial to consumer systems, including digital circuits, logic-level converters, binary and decimal arithmetic logic units, engine control systems, and automotive, computers, telecommunications, and aerospace systems.

The working principle of the 74HC164D14 shift register is quite simple yet important. Upon receiving input data and clock, the data first goes to the first flip-flop and then to the rest in order. When the clock is triggered by user, the data at the output of the last flip-flop is stored in the next flip-flop, thus shifting all the data 1 place to the right, while the data at the first flip-flop is discarded. This process continues until the last flip-flop is reached and the data is stored.

In addition, the 74HC164D14 features a reset input that enables synchronization by resetting the flip-flops and setting the shift register outputs to logic low. This reset feature is useful when the shift register is used to capture a sequence of data pulses.
