The device also includes two modes of operation, the Parallel-to-Serial (PTS) mode and the Serial-to-Parallel (STP) mode. For PTS mode the data is shifted in reverse order, while the STP mode the data is shifted in the same direction as it was initially loaded.

This device is also equipped with a 4-bit shift counter to control the bits enabled (CE) signal. The CE signal will enable the transfer of data into and out of the shift register. The 74HCT595D-Q100,118 also contains a reset (RESET) pin, which will reset the shift register to its default state when low.

After the data is loaded, the CE signal can be enabled and the data is shifted from the start of the shift register to the end of the shift register.
