A pull-up resistor must be connected to the output register in order for it to work properly. The pins that must be connected to the bus connection are CS, R/W, and A\0. The CS pin stands for Chip Select and must be connected to the ground to enable data transfer. The R/W pin represents the Read/Write signal and determines whether the device is either reading or writing data. Finally, the A\0 pin determines whether or not the input or output register reads or writes data.

The 74LCX652MSAX is designed such that it will enable data transfer when the ‘output enable’ pin is in the low state, and both read and write operations will occur according to the R/W pin levels. If the ‘output enable’ stays in the high state, then no data will be transferred. Otherwise, read and write operations can take place in either direction according to which logic level is applied to the A\0 pin.
