The 74LVTH16240MEAX is a member of the logical family of buffering, driving, receiving, and transmitting devices. It is a low-voltage, high-speed, low-power, triple-edge clocked logistic latch, designed to provide four independent, one-to-eight level, 3-state outputs with bus enable and latch control. The latch has two separate programmable operating modes: 8-bit bus mode and 16-bit bus mode. The 74LVTH16240MEAX device is ideal for high-speed, low cost, interconnections between application data buses and backplanes.
Functionality
The latch incorporates four independent, one-to-eight level, 3-state outputs. The bus enable (OE) and latch control (LE) inputs provide programmable control of the data outputs. When LE is taken low, the data stored in the latch is held in the outputs; when LE changes from low to high, the data stored in the latch is transferred to the outputs.
When enabled (OE = active low), all data inputs and outputs are latched, and the lower four data bits (D[0] to D[3]) are in the tri-state condition (high impedance). But when the OE input is taken high, the data outputs are placed into the tri-state condition, regardless of the input data status.
The device also provides a global chip enable (BE) input, which allows the entire latched to be disabled (replacing all outputs to the high impedance state), irrespective of the OE and LE inputs.
Application Field
The 74LVTH16240MEAX latch is ideal for high-speed data bus interconnections, such as those between CPUs, DSPs, ASICs, and memory. It is also suitable for clock synchronization and synchronization of control words in communication systems.
The device is especially suited for connection to an external RAM or ROM linked to a microcontroller, or general memory data access. It is pin-and-function compatible with other 74LVTH16240MEAX latches, and provides a wide range of bus configurations with bus widths of 8-bits, 16-bits, and 32-bits.
Working Principle
The 74LVTH16240MEAX latch operates in 8-bit bus mode and 16-bit bus mode. In 8-bit bus mode, the latch’s four data outputs (D[0] to D[3]) are connected to the corresponding data inputs (D[0] to D[3]) on the microcontroller, ROM or RAM, and the data bit is clocked into the output buffer after the LE signal is set to active low (LE = 0). In 16-bit bus mode, the latched is connected to two 8-bit data buses on the microcontroller, ROM or RAM. The data is then clocked into the output buffer after the LE signal is set to active low (LE = 0).
The outputs of the latch are tri-stated when the OE signal is active high (OE = 1). This is useful in preserving system system functions while the data interconnection is being updated. Additionally, the global chip enable (BE) input can be used to control the output tri-stated condition, regardless of the OE and LE input status.
The device is capable of operation with a maximum clock frequency of 275 MHz and it is capable of maintaining an output voltage of 5V. It is also capable of operating over a wide range of voltages, from 2.7V to 5.5V. The device is capable of dissipating a maximum operating temperature of 70°C.
