Working Principle

87004AGILF is based on a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and a phase-locked loop (PLL) to provide the four frequency outputs. The VCO is supplied with a DC voltage and outputs a frequency that depends on the voltage, allowing it to be tuned over a wide range of frequencies. The output frequency of the VCO is fed into a divider in the PLL which divides the frequency down to a programmable output frequency. The divided frequency is then compared to a reference signal in a phase/frequency detector which generates an error signal that is then fed into an amplifier to generate a tuning voltage for the VCO. The amplifier adjusts the VCO output frequency to match the programmed output frequency.

The three other outputs on the 87004AGILF are generated by the same VCO and PLL, but with different output frequency dividers. This allows up to four independent frequencies to be generated which can be used to generate synchronous, asynchronous or asymmetrical signals.
