Working Principle

At the core of 8N4DV85EC is a temperature compensated voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) housed in a 10 pin ceramic surface mount. The VCXO includes an 8 pin VCXO Analog Die that is integrated with a 2 pin 25 MHz crystal and a HCMOS frequency divider, which are all mounted on the same surface. The 8N4DV85EC uses a proprietary control loop architecture to ensure low jitter operation at frequencies between 1 and 800MHz. This produces a highly reliable signal with superior signal-to-noise ratio.

In the control loop architecture, the crystal and divider are thermostatically compensated by a temperature sensor which provides voltage to correct for frequency drift caused by temperature changes. The output frequency is determined by the following equation:

Frequency = 25MHz * Feedback_divider * VCO_divider

As digital signals are used, there is no need to adjust an external voltage control to adjust the frequency sweep.
