The 8T49N203A-027NLGI is a high-performance Any-Rate low-power frequency synthesizer targeting demanding frequency-generation and clock-generation applications operating in frequencies from 40MHz to 3.2GHz. It is made with Silicon Labs’ advanced Ingenuity™ process and is packaged in a 7mmx7mm, 49 ball, CSP_BGA package.

The 8T49N203A-027NLGI is targeted to applications that require precise generation and modulation of RF frequencies, such as portable wireless devices; backbone wireless systems; precision low-phase noise clocks for high-density FPGA, ASIC, and DSP applications; ultra-wideband radio systems; and millimeter-wave radio systems.

The 8T49N203A-027NLGI is a multifunction complex mixed-signal device that offers an integrated Step Phase-Locking Loop (StepPLL) with a programmable charge pump and also contains a low-power Any-Rate Digital PLL (ADPLL) and integrated VCO tracking. The on-chip configurable features include flexible loop bandwidth, fast locking time, and low-noise performance. The 8T49N203A-027NLGI offers excellent jitter performance over a large operating temperature range and maintains the low-power characteristic even at the highest frequencies.

Working Principle

The 8T49N203A-027NLGI contains two PLLs for configuring the chip for two independent frequencies or two independent outputs. It includes an ADPLL, which works as a precision frequency synthesizer for wide-band and modulation applications, and a StepPLL for low-phase noise clock generation. The StepPLL uses an external reference clock and is a fully integrated device that requires no external components. Its charge pump is programmable, allowing the user to adjust the loop gains of the VCO and loop filter.

The StepPLL has a wide range of programmable parameters that can be used to optimize jitter performance and noise characteristics. It also employs a dual VCO configuration to ensure optimized performance over a wide frequency range and a wide temperature range. In addition, the StepPLL has an Automatic Frequency Control (AFC) that helps reduce the effects of frequency drifts due to temperature variations on the reference oscillator.

The ADPLL is a high-performance, wide-band frequency synthesizer, which can be configured for both fixed-frequency operation and any-rate modulation application. Its digital domain architecture includes multiple loop filters, numerical-controlled oscillators (NCOs), and digital phase-frequency detectors. It provides precise frequency control and fast settling times, even under the most demanding conditions such as high-speed frequency hopping and high-speed phase modulation. The 8T49N203A-027NLGI can be programmed for synchronization of multiple clocks and for frequency beaming, which significantly reduces reference noise for applications that require wideband frequency modulation.
