Crystals are components found in many electronic devices, including computers, cell phones, radios, televisions and other devices. A crystal is a piezoelectric material (sometimes referred to as “piezo” or “piezoelectric”) that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy when it is deformed. It also converts mechanical energy into electrical energy when subjected to mechanical loading. Crystals are used as frequency control elements in oscillators better known as ‘crystal oscillators’.

ABLS-10.000MHZ-B4-T Crystal is an example of such a crystal. It is a 10.000MHz quartz crystal with a 14 pin through hole mounting configuration. This type of crystal is commonly used in consumer electronics and is often referred to as a ‘Standard Fundamentals’ crystal. It is manufactured in a variety of package styles depending on intended application.

The main advantages of using this type of crystal are its low cost, good stability and easy tuning. The typical frequency accuracy of these crystals is +/- 20ppm, although higher accuracy crystal can be configured. Applications for these crystals include but are not limited to: oscillator based electronic circuits, clock generation and adjustable frequency generation.

The basic operating principle of crystals is based on their piezo-electric effect. This involves the generation of an electric field when a crystal is subjected to mechanical stress – resulting in energy being converted from electrical to mechanical. In crystal oscillators, the crystal is used to provide feedback to an oscillator circuit by establishing frequency stability. The crystal is ‘tuned’ so that the frequency at which it oscillates (or resonates) is close to the desired operating frequency of the circuit.

The crystal is then connected to the terminals of an oscillator circuit, such as an amplifier. When voltage is applied to the crystal, an electric field is created within the crystal structure. This electric field causes a mechanical strain within the quartz structure and the frequency of this mechanical strain is determined by the shape and size of the crystal. This mechanical strain then causes a corresponding electric field to be generated within the crystal which feeds back to the amplifier circuit.

When the mechanical and electrical fields reach equilibrium, then a steady oscillating frequency is produced. This frequency is determined by the dimensions of the crystal and is highly temperature dependent.

The ABLS-10.000MHZ-B4-T crystal is ideal for a variety of applications, including clock generation and frequency generation. The crystal is low cost and easy to tune, making it an excellent choice for a range of electronic devices. Its relatively low frequency accuracy and temperature dependence also make it suitable for use in many consumer electronic applications.
