NTC Thermistors or Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistors are temperature sensors that feature a negative resistance vs. temperature characteristic. This means that increasing temperature results in decreasing resistance. The ACC011 application field and working principle is concerned with the Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors.
Thermistors are solid state devices and, as such, do not contain any moving parts and can withstand high shock and vibration applications. Furthermore, NTC thermistors are small, typically small in size, and they have stable long-term performance and construction. The other good feature of NTC thermistors is that they are relatively inexpensive when compared to other temperature sensing devices.
The ACC011 application field and working principle show that these devices can be used for a wide variety of applications. For instance, they are widely utilized for temperature control, usually for heating purposes, or for over-temperature protection. They are also used in refrigerators and freezers, and for medical applications, such as body temperature monitoring. Because of its small size and simple construction, NTC thermistors are becoming increasingly popular for use in wearables and other consumer electronics.
The working principle of NTC thermistors is fairly simple. In essence, they convert temperature changes into an electrical signal. The rate of change in resistance of the thermistor is known as its Beta Value or B-Value. This B-Value is proportional to temperature changes and provides the thermistor linearity that is needed for temperature measurements.
The most common type of NTC thermistor is the Nickel-Ceramic thermistor, which is typically composed of a nickel pellet and a ceramic material, such as zirconia. The core of the thermistor is typically very small and its resistance at a given temperature is usually expressed as a resistance at a given reference temperature, most often 25°C.
The ACC011 application field and working principle also address the possible issues, such as the thermistor self-heating or the power-dissipation of the resistance. This is because the thermistors generate heat due to their high-resistance characteristics. To reduce this effect, it is important to limit the current through the thermistor and to use heat sinks or other cooling methods to reduce the power dissipated.
NTC thermistors are gaining traction in the consumer electronics market and are expected to be adopted widely as more and more applications begin to use them. In addition, NTC thermistors offer a reliable temperature measurement that is not only cost-effective but also resistant to shock and vibrations.
