Common Mode Chokes
Common mode chokes are inductors, also known as common mode current filters, that are used to help reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and protect against other environmental electrical noise. Common mode chokes are especially useful for sensitive signal and power applications where EMI needs to be reduced. They are used in many industries, including automotive, aerospace, medical device, and data communications. Common mode chokes are also commonly found in home electronics and audio systems.
ACM-0603-450-T Application Field and Working Principle
The ACM-0603-450-T is a low profile, wide frequency range, common mode choke specifically designed for use in low voltage, low power sensitive applications. It is suitable for interference suppression and differential mode noise attenuation in a wide variety of applications including automotive, cell phones, consumer electronics and antennas.
The ACM-0603-450-T common mode choke consists of three separate coils of wire that act together as a single inductor. The first coil forms the filtering inductor. This coil is wound in a fashion so that a high frequency electrical noise is introduced by the EMI source into the primary winding. This electrical noise is then attenuated by the inductor’s frequency dependent characteristics.
Second, the second coil is in the form of a helical-type of winding interlinked with the first coil. This component is responsible for blocking high frequency noise signals from entering into the system. It is also responsible for the differential-mode suppression. Third, the third coil helps to suppress differential mode noise. It comprises current sensing windings coupled with the primary winding of the first coil. This allows for the detection of small currents from EMI sources and suppresses them before they reach sensitive components in the system.
The ACM-0603-450-T common mode choke uses its frequency dependent characteristics to attenuate EMI noise down to acceptable levels for critical applications. It provides 50 Ohms impedance over a wide frequency range of 1MHz to 1GHz, which allows for higher frequency noise suppression. The choke also features low profile, high efficiency, good heat conductivity, low DC resistance, excellent linearity, and a high volumetric efficiency.
