Working Principle of the ACPL-072L

The ACPL-072L optoisolator is basically a light-activated switch with a built-in resistor limiting the amount of current that can flow from the input to the output. It works on the principle of photoconductive effect, where an incident light ray causes a certain number of electrons to transfer from the lighter side of the junction to the heavier side. This in turn causes an exchange in the charges, resulting in a current flow. When the light is extinguished, the current stops.

The ACPL-072L is composed of four elements, namely a LED, an integrated resistor, a phototransistor and a Schmitt Trigger. The integrated resistor is used to limit the amount of current flowing from input to output. The LED is used to produce the light ray which is detected by the phototransistor. The Schmitt Trigger is used to provide an extra noise immunity to the circuit.

When a voltage is applied to the input of the opto-isolator, a current is sent to the LED. The LED then begins to emit light which is detected by the phototransistor.
