The ACT8870EVK1-101 is an evaluation board with power management applications. This board is categorized as an off-line DC/DC and AC/DC SMPS and provides an off-the-shelf platform for testing, development, and evaluation of various power management requirements for system level power applications. The ACT8870EVK1-101 evaluation board comes pre-configured to operate a stand-alone off-line DC/DC and AC/DC SMPS. Its layout allows for ease of use and integration of peripheral devices. The board’s installed components are sufficient to allow for testing and evaluation of the ACT8870 semiconductor over a wide range of voltage supply ranges and power loads. There is an available demo board to allow for the incorporation of additional peripherals to enable further testing ground.
The power management unit on the evaluation board is the host for the ACT8870 semiconductor. The ACT8870 provides a wide range of programmable features and functions. It is capable of both DC/DC and AC/DC conversions at rated power levels. Its switching frequency is adjustable from 500kHz up to 600kHz and provides a complete range of output voltage levels to meet customer load requirements. The ACT8870 works in cooperation with an external MOSFET to convert an unregulated input voltage into a regulated output voltage.
The evaluation board’s power components are integrated to form a complete circuit whose primary components include a power MOSFET, a driver circuit, an inductor, and a ceramic capacitor. The MOSFET and the driver circuit together form the switching element, and their combination ensures that only low on-state losses are incurred during the power conversion cycles. The inductor and capacitor form the power filter to convert the high frequency switching waveform of the MOSFET into a low-noise and clean DC voltage. The MOSFET is operated in such a way as to reduce the output voltage ripple to the minimally possible level.
The ACT8870EVK1-101 evaluation board also features a graphical user interface in order to facilitate testing and design. This graphical user interface provides access to all of the necessary functional registers and allows for easy configuration of the IC. In addition, an installation guide is provided which outlines the steps necessary for installing and setting up the board. Furthermore, several software tools are available to further enhance the design process.
The evaluation board provides a convenient platform for evaluation and testing of the ACT8870 across a variety of applications.
