1. Describe

The AD5220BRZ10-REEL7 provides a single-channel, 128-bit digitally controlled variable resistor (VR) device. This device performs the same electronic adjustment function as a potentiometer or variable resistor. These products are optimized for instrumentation and test equipment push button applications. Choose between bandwidth or power consumption thanks to a wide selection of end-to-end termination resistor values. The AD5220BRZ10-REEL7 consists of a fixed resistor with wiper contacts in a digitally controlled UP/DOWN counter. The resistance between the wiper and either end of the fixed resistor provides a constant resistance step equal to the end-to-end resistance divided by the number of positions (for example, RsTEP = 10 k / 128 = 78 Q). Variable resistors provide a true adjustable resistance value between the A terminal and the wiper, or between the B terminal and the wiper. Fixed A to B termination resistors of 10 k12, 50 k2 or 100 k have a nominal temperature coefficient of 800 ppm "C". Chip select CS, count CLK, and U/D direction control inputs set the variable resistor position, and these inputs to control the internal UP/DOWN counter can easily be generated by mechanical or push button switches (or other contact closure devices). An external debounce circuit is required on the negative edge sensitive CLK pin. This simple digital interface eliminates the need for a microcontroller in the front panel interface design. The AD5220BRZ10-REEL7 is available in surface mount (SO-8) and 8-lead plastic DIP packages. For ultra-compact solutions, some models are available in thin SOIC packages. All parts are guaranteed to operate over the extended industrial temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
