The AD5232BRUZ10 is a quad digital potentiometer that provides a maximum 10 kΩ resistance with 128 wiper steps per section. This potentiometer is a three-terminal device composed of two resistors (R1 and R2) and one wiper. R1 and R2 create a voltage divider network, and the wiper enters the midpoint of the two resistors, as shown in Figure 1. The AD5232BRUZ10 has a single digital input (SERIN) and four separate digital outputs (Gx, Lx, Rx and Dx). Working Principle of AD5232BRUZ10
The AD5232BRUZ10 uses a three-wire interface (SERIN, Gx, Lx, Rx and Dx) to control its position. The SERIN pin is used to read the resistance setting from an external device. The Gx, Lx, and Dx pins help to detect the direction, or the difference between the current and previous resistance setting. The Rx pin is used to latch the data right after (Rx is LOW) or before (Rx is HIGH) the SERIN pin is clocked.
The digital potentiometer is generally operated in a voltage control mode. The voltage between the R1 and R2 terminals is applied representing a reference voltage. This reference voltage is then compared with the voltages generated at the R1 and R2 terminals. The output voltage at the wiper determines the resistance setting. The reading of the voltage at the wiper is provided by a separate digital-to-analog converter.
In addition to its voltage control mode, the AD5232BRUZ10 can also be used in a current control mode. The device allows for up to 100 mA of continuous current flow, which is sufficient for many applications. The resistance setting is determined by adjusting the reference voltage and comparing it to the voltage at the wiper. The current in the wiper is then used to determine the final resistance setting.
