The AD5251BRU1 is a second generation, low power CMOS I2C programmable digital potentiometer designed for use in a wide variety of automatic and manual controls to monitor, adjust, and trim DC voltage and AC levels. This device is ideal for use in audio systems, communication and automotive applications. The device is offered in 8-, 10-, and 12-pin MSOP and 16, 20, and 24-pin TSSOP packages.
The AD5251BRU1 provides a non-volatile digital ohmic value up to 256 wiper positions with a host of features such as low power consumption and a low voltage operation of 2.7V. This device features a robust memory architecture which supports overwrite protection of its digital registers, accessible through the I2C Interface. In addition, the digital potentiometer has integrated switches which can be used to connect a wiper terminal to either of the two end terminals.
The AD5251BRU1 offers extensive features and functionality for a wide range of control applications. The device has a wide range of wiper positions available for setting the desired resistance, which can be adjusted easily via an I2C serial interface. Additionally, the device provides an adjustable tap selection which is used to connect the resistive element to either end terminals. Furthermore, the device offers zero power operational and built-in protection against ESD (electrostatic discharge) and EMC (electromagnetic interference).

Working Principle:
The AD5251BRU1 is a digital potentiometer that functions based on the varying the resistance value of a solid state crystalline material. This resistance value is adjusted using a two-terminal wiper to connect the resistance element to either of the two end terminals. The resistance range is between 0Ω and 10KΩ, however, the actual resistance value can range from 0Ω to 256KΩ depending upon the position of the wiper. This device functions by setting the desired resistance value using the I2C serial interface. Once the target resistance value is acquired, the device\'s tap selection can be adjusted to switch over either of the two end terminals to the wiper.
The device\'s wiper position has 256 steps with a resolution of 0.39%. This resolution is more than enough to Precision Metrology. Furthermore, the device supports an internal memory where it stores the target resistance value, so if the power is switched off, the resistance value set earlier is restored when the power is switched back on.
