When the potential applied to the wiper terminal is lower than the reference voltage, the terminal is in the logic "low" state and when the potential applied to the wiper terminal is higher than the reference voltage, the terminal is in the logic "high" state.

The device can also be used as an adjustable current limiter, thanks to its non-volatile register. It controls the maximum current through its wiper terminal with an increment of 1 millionth of the full-scale resistance. As this is a non-volatile component, it can be easily restored after power loss and remain accurate at various power conditions.
