Data Acquisition - Digital Potentiometers includes the AD5262BRU50-REEL7, an electronically controlled digital potentiometer. This device is a low-voltage, 256 wiper values, SPI-compatible, nonvolatile digital potentiometer. It can store the last used wiper position in the device before power-down and restore the same wiper position on power-up. Its digital wiper position is saved in nonvolatile memory. This makes the device ideal for use as a multiple position mechanical potentiometer replacement.
This digital potentiometer has three pins and replaces the single or multi-turn analog potentiometer for dual purpose applications. As a variable resistor, it provides up to 256 unique equivalent resistor values. As a digital position switch, it provides an easy to use encoder switch configuration, using the addressable digital wiper position as an input to a device. This feature is ideal for signalling applications such as automotive switch configuration.
The working principle of the AD5262BRU50-REEL7 involves the use of a gain cell that is adjusted by the microprocessor to simulate a resistance signal. This signal is compared to a reference voltage, usually a VREF, to determine the output voltage that is to be applied to the wiper output. The microprocessor acts as the gain control by controlling the amount of charge stored in a capacitor. VREF is what determines the output reference point. When the current passes through the capacitor, it is charged with voltage, making the charge stored in the capacitor dependant on the reference voltage.
The resistor value is proportional to the voltage that is stored in the capacitor and can therefore be changed at any given time by changing the voltage of the VREF. This process of changing the output reference point allows for a wide range of different resistor values to be created from the same capacitor. As the voltage increases, the amount of charge stored in the capacitor increases as well, making the resistance of the resistor go up.
