Data acquisition is an important field in the engineering sector, with the necessity of collecting data from various currents, voltages, temperature and other physical phenomena for engineering considerations. Digital-to-analog converters (DAC) are an important component of the data acquisition process, for the conversion of raw digital data into a voltage or current analog signal. This is achieved by either pulse code modulation (PCM) or pulse width modulation (PWM). Among the DACs, the AD7225LN is useful for numerous industrial and commercial applications, due to its robust design, performance and industrial grade temperature range.

The work principle of the AD7225LN is based on the principle of voltage output DAC and current output DAC, usually obtained by the two legs output of the binary weighted resistor network. Voltage output DAC is based on a resistor string and voltage reference, where the resistance value of each resistor is equal to the weight of the digital input. This method allows for redundancy within the system, so even if one resistor fails, the remainder of the system remains unaffected. In this case, the voltage is used as output where the width of the final output voltage is determined by the weighting of the resistor value.

Current output DAC is instead based on a single current source, rather than a voltage source, and the length of the current output is determined by the weighting of the digital input. This is achieved by connecting a series of current mirrors, which are also known as transimpedance amplifiers, and each one generating a current with a relative weighting. In this style, the unit operates on a relative resistance ratio to the binary input in order to generate the current output. This design is more compact and suited for low power applications.

The AD7225LN has the advantage of being able to produce both voltage and current outputs depending on the application, and so is able to fit a variety of data acquisition scenarios. It is capable of providing 8- to 16-bit resolution on the circuit, over a temperature range of -25°C to +85°C, and is able to track temperature and performance over time. Its low power operation means that it is suitable for low power designs, and its 25 ksps update rate allows it to operate with few artifacts day to day. Additionally, it has a built-in reference voltage option, as well as double power supply options to ensure stable performance.

The AD7225LN is well suited for many data acquisition applications, due to its robust and reliable design, ample temperature range and performance over time. Its 16-bit resolution, and the ability to output both voltage and current, makes it a flexible and effective component for a variety of systems, from commercial and industrial applications to communications and connectivity networks.
