The AD736ARZ is a precision RMS-to-DC converter designed to meet the needs of both low noise, high density, and low power applications. It is a low power, high performance, fast settling, precision instrumentation amplifier (IA) that converts a true RMS voltage signal into a corresponding DC level. The AD736ARZ is available in three configurations, the single-ended, differential gain, and the differential-gain-only version, offering a wide range of performance and options for various applications. The AD736ARZ uses a three-stage architecture consisting of an input stage, one or two bridged IA stages, and an output stage. The input stage contains two amplifier blocks. The first is a unity-gain voltage follower, which provides a low-impedance input to the differential IA and reduces the input current requirement at the source. The second is a buffer and a DC offset adjustment section. The differential amplified sections can be configured as unity gain and/or differential gain IA. The output stage uses an amplifier with an adjustable gain of 1, 2 and 4. This proportioning can be used to adjust an input signal’s DC level for power amplifier switching or for different signal levels.

The AD736ARZ features excellent signal-to-noise performance and is capable of converting signals up to 500kHz with low harmonic distortion, while consuming very low power (1mA maximum). The signal-to-noise ratio is 95dB typical. The device is protected from excessive common-mode voltage, and its output is designed to resist disturbances in order to maintain its accuracy. The power rail is not connected to the signal pins, allowing for fast warm-up and settle times. This feature helps provide the user with the most accurate and highest resolution attainable.
