The AD7840KPZ is a high precision 12-bit monolithic CMOS Digital to Analog Converter (DAC). It is designed to offer performance and flexibility with a wide range of application fields. The AD7840KPZ is specified for use from a single 5V supply and provides a wide range of output voltages from ground to Vcc. It combines a low output noise, low temperature drift and low power consumption, making it particularly suitable for applications in audio, video and general purpose instrumentation.The AD7840KPZ is a two-step architecture with a separate reference generator and DAC. The DAC supplies a voltage which is proportional to the digital code loaded. The accuracy of the AD7840KPZ is mainly influenced by the gain and offset errors which are compensated in the two-step architecture. The offset and gain errors are cancelled in the two-step architecture because the reference generator and the DAC are on the same integrated circuit.The reference generator has two operational ranges that can be selected by driving the REFSEL pin. This ensures a wide range of output voltage. The REFHI and REFLO pins are used to set the output range. The offset trim register allows internal fine adjustments to offset and which can be set through an externally applied DAC code.The DAC uses positive- and negative-switched resistors. These resistors are binary-weighted to produce the desired gain. The output code is determined by the digital control word loaded and it is monotonically related to the reference voltage. The output voltage is an inverse function of the digital code. The DAC output ranges from GND (Vss) to Vcc (Vdd).The AD7840KPZ has several modes of operation which can be selected by the nine control pins. These modes can be used to control the reference generator, DAC and output buffer circuits. The circuit allows shutdown of all power consuming elements except for the reference generator. This helps to reduce power consumption in static applications.The AD7840KPZ offers a wide range of features for data acquisition applications. It is specified for use from a single 5V supply and provides a wide range of output voltages from ground to Vcc. The circuit also ensures a high accuracy of the DAC output with low temperature drift and low output noise. The reference generator is designed to provide a wide range of output voltage and can be adjusted by the REFHI and REFLO pins.
