Data Acquisition - Analog Front End, also known as AFE, is an integrated device that serves to condense multiple signals into digital information for further analysis or transmission. Generally, AFE devices can be divided into two types, one for single-ended signal and one for differential signal. ADS1292R is the latest product of Texas Instruments, which is a low power precision analog front end device supporting 12-bit resolution and up to 16 single-ended (SE) or 8 differential input channels. In this article, the application field and working principle of ADS1292R will be discussed.
In terms of application field, ADS1292R can be widely used in the medical field, such as ECG, EEG and respiration monitoring. It can also be used in consumer and industrial applications, such as wireless wearable and environmental monitoring and vibration sensing. In fact, ADS1292R is one of the few AFEs in the market that is able to handle both single-ended and differential mode signals and adapts to both low and high impedance transducers, thus making it a widely used device among industry professionals.
In terms of the working principle, ADS1292R IRMS has the same principle as most of the other AFE circuits. It includes the following steps: First, input signals are amplified and aligned, before being attenuated and anti-aliased with a passive low-pass filter and then sent to a sample and hold (S&H) circuit. Second, the retained signals are pre-amplified and compared with the reference voltage in the analog-to digital convert (ADC). Finally, digital data is routed through multiplexer, low pass filter and data port, respectively, before being sent to the output.
Apart from these conventional processes, ADS1292R also has many other functions such as Constant Current Generator (CCG), Temperature Sensor (TS), ECG buffer, respiration buffer and Sleep Mode, all of which work together to enable the device’s energy saving and performance optimization. Specifically, the CCG waveform helps to reduce the noise by internally generating a current source which is proportional to the input voltage level. The temperature sensor also helps to adjust the internal reference voltage depending on the environmental temperature, increasing the device’s accuracy. The Sleep Mode is extremely energy efficient, reducing the current consumption to as low as 1 microamp.
In conclusion, the ADS1292R is an excellent AFE device, with a wide range of applications and features. It has an excellent dynamic range and low power consumption, which makes it an ideal choice for medical and industrial applications. Furthermore, its ability to handle both single-ended and differential mode signals and to handle low and high impedance transducers make it a cost-effective and versatile solution for many applications.
