Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) are used to convert analog input signals to digital output signals for improved accuracy in measurement and transmission. The ADS7818EVM is a multi-purpose evaluation board for an 8-bit, single-channel analog-to-digital conversion (ADC). It is designed to evaluate the performance and features of Texas Instruments’ ADS7818ADC. This evaluation board is reinforced with useful features such as microcontroller interface, serial digital I/O, programmable test loop, built-in logic switches, etc. It is also compatible with Texas Instruments’ Code Composer Studio development tools. Measurement readings are output via the serial digital I/O interface or displayed directly on the LED display.

When running the ADS7818EVM, one needs to configure all the necessary control parameters before taking any data. The control parameters are grouped into four categories, e.g. differential gain mode, sample rate, input range and digital offset. After a proper configuration is set, the ADC takes a single measurement of incoming analog data and converts it into a specified resolution. Then, the ADC stores data in a preset location in the board’s built-in RAM. With the use of the on-board microcontroller, users can access the RAM or write back to it from an external programming tool. Finally, the ADC takes another measurement and the process is repeated until the selected operation is complete.
