AEK-2.4-USP is a radio frequency(RF) evaluation and development kit based on IEEE 802.15.4 low-rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN). AEK-2.4-USP provides an easy platform for the development of advanced radio technologies.The AEK-2.4-USP provides a complete working environment for the development of IEEE 802.15.4 systems and applications. It includes a central station board and a peripheral board. These boards are based on the IEEE 802.15.4-2006 specification and are implemented with the Atmel AT90USB1287 microcontroller (MCU).The central station board contains all the necessary components to create a low-rate WPAN. It consists of an MCU, radio transceiver, connectors for connecting to an external antenna and computers, 5V and 3.3V power sources, and both an LCD and a User Interface. The peripherals board is also based on the AT90USB1287 and allows for the connection of up to 4 peripheral devices. The MCU on the AEK-2.4-USP boards is capable of operating at up to 8MHz, granting the user ample computational power. The MAC layer of the system is handled by the Atmel MAC, simplifying the development of fast or complex communication protocols. The transceiver of the AEK-2.4-USP supports up to 2 Mbps in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, with -103 dBm sensitivity. The RF connection of the kit is allowed through a u.FL connector and the use of an external antenna.The AEK-2.4-USP also provides several peripherals and interfaces, including UART, SPI, I2C, PWM, and ADC. Depending on the complexity of the application, different sensors can be connected to the board such as motion detectors, temperature sensors or humidity detectors. Additionally, the board includes a micro USB connector, allowing it to be connected to any computer running Windows 7 or higher, without the need of any additional software. Regarding the user interface, the AEK-2.4-USP includes a LCD and a 3 Pushbutton Interface. The LCD has an array of 16-characters and 2 lines. The 3 Pushbutton Interface can be used to select menu items or to enter data into the system. One of the main advantages of the AEK-2.4-USP is its flexibility. It is compatible with a large variety of IEEE 802.15.4 networks, which makes it suitable for both long-distance and short-range applications.
