RF antennas are widely used in radio frequencies for telecommunications, broadcasting, and radiodetermination. From commercial television to military surveillance, antennas are essential components to successful transmission and reception of signals. The advancement of technology has pushed antennas to the forefront of modern high speed communication and dramatically increased the data rates involved. A key part of this modern transmission is the use of Active Frequency Tuned Slot (AFTS) antennas.
An AFTS antenna is a type of microstrip patch antenna that uses a frequency selective surface to create a resonant frequency at a narrow band of frequencies. This type of antenna is known for its high efficiency, wideband operation, low glare and low profile characteristics. The active elements of AFTS antennas are thin conductive strips that are arranged in a pattern that when energized, provide a widened bandwidth in the selected frequency range.
The AFTS antenna consists of five different components: the substrate, the feed, the slot, the active elements and the ground plane. The substrate is the material that the antenna is mounted on, which is usually an FR4 laminate, but can also be a glass epoxy or other material. The feed is the electrical input of the antenna, which can be either a coaxial cable or waveguide. The slot is the most critical element of the AFTS antenna and contains the active elements. The active elements are thin strips of electrically conductive material that create an RF oscillating field when energized. The ground plane forms the bottom side of the microstrip antenna and is usually constructed of a metal plate.
The working principle of AFTS antennas is based on their frequency selective surface (FSS). The FSS is located underneath the active elements and consists of a dielectric substrate with a metallic deposit layer in the form of a periodic stripe pattern. When an RF signal is sent to the antenna, the RF signal is divided into two parts – an electrical component and a magnetic component. The electric component is strongly absorbed by the FSS while the magnetic component is transmitted through the FSS and then excited by the active elements. This creates a resonance in the frequency range that was selected by the antenna.
The advantage of AFTS antennas is their ability to provide high efficiency and wideband operation, while still having a low profile. AFTS antennas have become essential in modern communication systems for applications such as cellular networks, radar, GPS, and satellite communication. With the advancements in technology, AFTS antennas have become the preferred antenna type for many communication systems due to their flexibility and performance.
