AS3933-BTST is a multifunctional circuit which integrates many features enabling the realization of various applications. It is particularly suited for addressing needs of solutions where the use of a single chip allows architects to create added value. It is utilized in radio frequency identification (RFID), radio frequency access (RFA) and monitoring systems.

AS3933-BTST is one of the few ICs in the market which is compatible with both the HF 13.56 MHz but also LF 125/134 kHz transponder protocols. Compatible with ISO/IEC 18092, ISO/IEC 15693, ISO/IEC 14443, ISO 30303, and ISO/IEC 11784/11785, this multifunctional transponder runs very low energy. This makes AS3933-BTST particularly suitable for battery-less applications running at low power.

One of the main features of AS3933-BTST is its diversity. This is achieved by combining a smart energy harvesting IC connected to an antenna, an energy storage element, and a capacitance sensor able to detect smaller variations, allowing the user to differentiate between individuals’ transponders. Moreover, It integrates a pressure sensor and temperature sensor to enhance identification of objects for future industry applications.

Working Principle

AS3933-BTST works like any RFID systems, which are comprised of an antenna, tag, and reader. The tag consists of the transponder chip, equipped with an antenna to resonate with the reader. The reader is comprised of a microcontroller, RF power amplifier, antenna, and related control logic and components.

The tag and reader are used in an energy harvesting system, in which the tag receives energy from the reader, which it stores in an integrated storage element and provides the energy required for its operation. The reader also transmits data to the transponder chip in the tag, which in turn evaluates and responds to these requests. Depending on the instruction it received, it then processes the request and sends back an acknowledgement or other data.

Furthermore, AS3933-BTST tag also utilizes an energy detection circuit, which optimizes the overall efficiency of the tag. It helps to dynamically optimize the energy harvesting process by dynamically changing the reader’s power input. This allows the tag to harvest the optimal energy from the reader for its operations, thus increasing overall efficiency and reducing power consumption.

In addition, the embedded temperature sensor, pressure sensor, and capacitance sensor gives the user more detailed control of the system. The pressure sensor records changes in pressure in the environment, while the temperature sensor records ambient temperature. The capacitance sensor can also be used to determine the presence of electric current. All of these sensors work together to provide a more detailed and complex picture of the system’s environment.
