Working Principle
AST3TQ53-V-30.720MHZ-2-SW-T2 is a voltage-controlled temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (VCXO). Voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) is a type of oscillator that works through temperature and voltage compensations to maintain an output frequency within a certain frequency tolerance. VCXOs are mainly used in point-to-point and mobile communication systems. VCXOs have a temperature-dependent tuning crystal element which can adjust its frequency with respect to changes in ambient temperature. The crystal oscillator has a tuning port and a control port which are connected with an external circuit for external feedback loop. For converting the voltage into frequency, the crystal oscillator utilizes a capacitive divider and a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit which is externally tuned via a current-controlled resistor. The tuning port of the VCXO circuit is connected to a crystal element of the same oscillating frequency as the model being used, and the frequency of the crystal element is tunable over a wide temperature range with help from an external controllable voltage source. Controlling the supply voltage to the crystal oscillator enables its output frequency to be adjusted with respect to changes in ambient temperature or external voltage. Through the control port, AST3TQ53-V-30.720MHZ-2-SW-T2 is externally supplied with a DC voltage to drive an external capacitive divider or a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit. The DC voltage supplied to the control port (VCTRL) creates an effective capacitive loading which can also be varied by external adjustment. The VCXO’s frequency is varied with the temperature changes and control port voltage by sensing the thermal coefficient of the crystal and the temperature coefficient of external capacitive components, varying the crystal oscillation frequency to compensate for the temperature change or control port voltage changes.
