Attenuators and AT-903(40) Applications and Working Principle

Attenuators are used to reduce the power of an RF signal by a predetermined amount. This can be done with various circuit designs, but today the most commonly used attenuators are mechanical in nature. Many of these attenuators employ a two step process involving a resistor network and a potentiometer. The resistor network attenuates the signal and the potentiometer further fine-tunes the attenuation amount. The AT-903(40) attenuator is one such system catering to a wide range of applications. It has four operating frequencies, 30MHz, 115MHz, 455MHz and 960MHz, and is designed to attenuate an incoming signal in either forward or reverse directions to the balance point of 40dB. This means that if the incoming signal is stronger than 40dB (balance point) the output signal will be weaker than 40dB, and vice versa. This AT-903(40) attenuator is manufactured using a resistor network combined with an adjustable potentiometer. Usually, the potentiometer is broken down into ranges of -10 dB, 0 dB, 10 dB, 20 dB and 30 dB. This is due to the fact that the resistor network is suboptimal in the last couple of dB of attenuation. To reach the full 40 dB of attenuation, an additional 10 dB is added via the potentiometer. The AT-903(40) attenuator is a versatile system, with five single-ended outputs and four differential outputs. The 5 outputs are nominally rated at -20V, 0V, +20V, +50V, and +80V. These outputs are designed to provide the same attenuation level on both the source and sink, thus allowing for excellent control over the signal flow. The four differential outputs are rated at -20V/-50V, 0V/-30V, +20V/0V, and +50V/+20V and provide precise control of the attenuation along a single differential pair. The AT-903(40) attenuator is ideal for a number of applications. It is able to minimize crosstalk and allow for the use of smaller traces in high speed digital systems. It is also used by cellular base station equipment, where it can provide VSAT level control. The attenuator is also used in radio frequency applications, where it can provide isolation between two different systems or modules.
