Film Capacitors Application field and Working Principle
Film Capacitors, also known as plastic film capacitors, are usually made with plastic electrodes filled with specific electrolyte. The main electrode material includes polypropylene, polycarbonate, Teflon and other materials, among which polypropylene is widely used due to its excellent characteristics. This kind of capacitor is designed for withstanding high voltage or high temperature and has features like small volume, reliable performance, good self-healing properties, and high insulation resistance.
Application Field
Due to the advantageous trait of small volume, film capacitors can be used in lots of electronic equipment. Generally speaking, they can be classified into three places: AC and DC power supply, telecommunication base station and pre-amplifier.
- AC and DC Power Supply: Film capacitors can be applied to the low voltage DC power supply system, where capacitors work to reduce the harmonic load current, improve the power factor, remove the residual current, and stabilize the voltage.
- Telecommunication Base Station: Film capacitors are used as the new basing station capacitor, which is a required part of the power supply circuit. In particular, film capacitors are used as the bypass and filtering components. SP5474K000
- Pre-amplifier: Film capacitors are also widely used in the circuits of pre-amplifier. They are mainly used for filter waveform and Crossover network.

The basic principle of film capacitor is that the capacitor is formed by two metal plates that have certain distance between each other and are insulated. Since the two metal plates have an electric energy, one plate is positive while the other plate is negative. According to the laws of electrostatics, the electric energy of the two plates must be equal. And if there is a load across the two plates, then the electric current will flow between the two plates, and the voltage of each plate will then be different.
In this process, the difference between the two plates will be reduced until it is zero. This phenomenon is called dielectric breakdown, and it is the working principle of film capacitors. The two plates are insulated by an electrolyte, and when the two plates are kept apart at certain distance, they will work to reduce the current between the two plates. This is the reason why the film capacitors have the ability to store electric energy.
