B32911B3223M000 Application Field and Working Principle of Film Capacitors
Film capacitors, also known as plastic film capacitors or foil capacitors, are produced by winding two layers of plastic sheets with their metal foil electrodes inside. Their unique characteristics of stability, small size, high-level properties, low noise, and large capacitance range makes them very popular in the electronics industry. They are used in a variety of applications ranging from power supplies and power amplifiers to audio equipment and radio receivers.
Some of the most common applications for film capacitors are in instruments, power supply filters, and for bypassing signals. In instruments, film capacitors provide stable current and voltage values as well as optically clean surfaces which make them suitable for wide range of applications. For example, they can be used in digital instruments where ultraviolet light exposure can cause damage, due to the insulation provided by the plastic film.
In power supplies, film capacitors are often employed as power supply filters. Their low losses and wide capacitor range make them ideal for high-frequency filtering in power supplies. At high frequencies, film capacitors conduct very little current due to the insulation provided by the plastic film, while still retaining high electrical charge capacity. This makes them ideal for filtering power supplies, preventing transients and building power supply regulation.
Finally, film capacitors can also be used and bypassing signals. In audio equipment, they are often used to adjust signal phase, or to block high frequencies and keep DC signals in check.
Working Principle of Film Capacitor
The working principle of a film capacitor is the same as that of a typical capacitor. When a voltage is applied across its terminals, a charge will flow into the plates. However, since the plates are separated by a dielectric material in film capacitors, the flow of charge is controlled and regulated by the dielectric material.
The charges stored in the capacitor plates are attracted to each other, which makes them separate from each other and stored as electric energy. The higher the strength of the material used in the dielectric, the more electric energy is stored in the capacitor. The dielectric material used in capacitors can be made from plastic, ceramic, paper or other materials.
The most common material used for film capacitors is polyester. Polyester film capacitors also have a high dielectric constant, making them especially well-suited for high-frequency use. They are often used in circuits which require fast transmission of signals, such as transmitters, receivers, and oscillators.
Another type of film capacitors are known as “tantalum foils” or tantalum electrolytic capacitors. These capacitors contain a thin layer of dielectric material (usually a ceramic or paper) between two metalized electrodes. The “tantalum” in the name refers to the high dielectric constant of the material used as the dielectric. Tantalum capacitors have high stability, wide capacitance range and good high-frequency characteristics.
By understanding the application fields and working principle of film capacitors, one can understand the importance and versatility of these devices. Film capacitors are used in a wide range of applications ranging from power supplies and amplifiers to digital instruments and radio receivers. Furthermore, the dielectric materials used in film capacitors provide better insulation and higher capacitance than other types of capacitors.
