Film capacitors, also known as plastic film capacitors or film dielectric capacitors, are passive electronic components composed of a thin plastic film (such as polyester, polymethylpentene or polycarbonate) as the dielectric layer, and electrodes deposited on both sides of it. They are also known as polyester, polypropylene or polystyrene capacitors, depending on the type of plastic film used.Film capacitors have many application fields, including providing power factor correction or filtering (due to its excellent high frequency characteristics), RF coupling, signal filtering, timing and pulse forming circuits, voltage dividers, and audio frequency (AF) signaling. Due to its excellent performance, film capacitors are also often used in power switching applications and power supply circuits.The main advantage of film capacitors is their excellent dielectric properties. They have very low internal losses and stable capacitance versus temperature, temperature drift and voltage. The dielectric strength of film capacitors is higher than that of electrolytic capacitors and ceramic capacitors. Moreover, film capacitors can be manufactured to very small values and can be made with very high voltages.Furthermore, film capacitors are also more reliable than ceramic or electrolytic capacitors, as they can hold their characteristics over a wide range of temperatures and voltages. This makes them ideal for high-voltage applications where reliability is paramount, such as in motor drive systems.The working principle of a film capacitor is the same as that of other capacitors. The two electrodes form an electric field between them when a voltage difference is applied. The dielectric material then stores the electrical energy in the form of an electric field between the two electrodes. This electric field allows electric charge to flow between the two electrodes when an alternating voltage is applied.Film capacitors are particularly useful in applications that require very high capacitance values since they can be manufactured with very high capacitance values. For instance, film capacitors can range from a few femtofarads (10-15F) up to several hundred microfarads (uF). They also have a very low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) which ensures minimal loss of energy and can reduce electronic interference.Overall, film capacitors are ideal for application fields that require high reliability, precise capacitance values and excellent high frequency characteristics. They are also preferable to electrolytic and ceramic capacitors in instances where a high capacitance value is needed or for applications where high temperatures, voltages and vibrations are expected.
