Film Capacitors

The BFC236617105 is a type of film capacitor, or film dielectric capacitor, that is commonly used in a range of applications. This type of high voltage capacitor is composed of a metalized film, usually made of polyester or polypropylene, which is rolled into a small cylinder shape or folded into an X-shaped configuration. It is then wound with thin aluminum or copper wire. Unlike electrolytic capacitors, film capacitors do not require a strong electrolyte to maintain their solid structure and do not suffer from drying out over time.

Applications

The BFC236617105 has a wide variety of uses. It is mainly used in applications which require a high degree of electrical insulation, such as voltage dividers, voltage doublers, and other component designs which require a large capacitance without consuming too much space. It is also used in applications such as power supply filters, as it has an excellent self-healing ability. This makes it very useful in smoothing out spikes and ripple in voltage. Working Principle

Film capacitors operate on the same principles as other types of capacitors. Inside the unit, there is a pair of metalized, dielectric- impregnated plates, which are separated by an insulating material. When an alternating current (AC) passes through the capacitor, the dielectric absorbs some of the energy, producing an electrical field between the plates of the capacitor. This field can be used to store and release energy in the form of a charge.

The characteristic of a film capacitor is determined by its dielectric material. Different materials have different dielectric constants, which determine the amount of energy absorbed by the capacitor. The most common dielectrics used in film capacitors are polyester, polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyphenylene Sulphide (PPS).

The self-healing feature of film capacitors is a result of the lower temperature coefficient of capacitance of the dielectric materials. This means that when an overload current or voltage is applied to the capacitor, the temperature of the dielectric increases. As the dielectric material heats up, it levitates and breaks down the surface contaminants, effectively lifting them off the plates. This results in a clean surface on the plates and eliminates the need for regular maintenance.
