What is a BK/ATC-15 Fuse?

A BK/ATC-15 fuse is a low-voltage, high-amperage, dual-element fuse designed for electrical motor overload protection, specifically ATC-15 circuit breakers. These fuses have a higher amperage rating than standard fuse types and are highly reliable.

Characteristics of BK/ATC-15 Fuses

The BK/ATC-15 fuse is typically constructed with a copper bi-metallic strip conductor, a metal oxide or kovar vapour chamber, and a ceramic insulating structure. It has an operating voltage of up to 30 volts and a current rating of 750 amperes. The fuse trips when the current rating is exceeded, protecting the circuit from being damaged by the excessive current.

The fuse has a time delay element that prevents the fuse from immediately tripping when the current overload occurs. This feature allows for a surge of current to safely pass through before tripping. Application of BK/ATC-15 Fuse

Working Principle of BK/ATC-15 Fuse

The BK/ATC-15 fuse contains two elements that are electrically connected. When a pre-determined current threshold is exceeded, a black (K-type) disk or a red (ATC-15) disk melts and the circuit is opened to prevent further current flow.

The black disk is filled with an organic material which melts with an increase of current. When the current reaches a predetermined level, the disk melts and the current is cut off. On the other hand, the red disk melts with an increase in temperature. When the temperature exceeds a certain limit, the disk melts and the circuit is opened.

The current-sensing element in the BK/ATC-15 fuse is pressure-sensitive in that it senses current when there is a voltage gradient across it. When the current exceeds a certain amount, the material in the disk melts, which opens the circuit and stops the current flow.

The BK/ATC-15 fuse offers excellent overload protection with minimal current leakage. It is also highly reliable and durable, making it a preferred choice for many applications.
