RF Evaluation and Development Kits, Boards are one of the most useful tools used in electronic engineering to develop and debug a wide variety of radio-frequency devices. The BMD-350-EVAL is an popular example of such tools, and understanding its application field and working principle gives us an insight on how to make the best of the technology to create the highest level of performance.
The BMD-350-EVAL is a comprehensive evaluation platform for Bluetooth 5.0 Low Energy, 802.11b/g/n applications, and ZigBee/Thread networks. It provides a rich range of features from dual-band wireless technology BMD-350 core chip, in-system programming, antenna selection/evaluation, comprehensive RF parameters analysis, to various test points and IO interfaces. With these features, various kinds of BMD-350 products can be tested and developed easily, from signals and protocols to data communication.
The BMD-350-EVAL platform comes with two SIP8 sockets, a main SIP8 socket and an sub SIP8 socket. The main SIP8 socket supports BMD-350 module, and the sub SIP8 socket supports a variety of expansion modules for vector analysis and other advanced functionality. The main socket has four points available for external connections: U1P, U2P, U3P, and U4P. The sub socket has two points available: U1P and U2P. U1P and U2P are both characterized by their 48-pin pitch.
The main BMD-350-EVAL system contains some of the most commonly used functions in the development of the BMD-350 chip. These functions include:
- Data transmitter/receiver
- Gain reduction
- Temperature sensor
- SDK integration
- System diagnostics
- Firmware update
- Sub 1GHz receiver
- 2.4GHz receiver
- Data encoder/decoder
- Power save mode
- RSSI measurement
- RF spectrum analyzer
- GPIO control
- PIO control
The chip also has several operating modes such as Sleep, Connected, Low Power and Idle. The Sleep mode will enter the Sleep mode after 3 seconds of typically receiving no connection. The Connected mode will allow the device to continue receiving data, as well as transmitting data. The Low Power mode will let the chip hibernate and save power when in an idle state. Finally, the Idle mode will let the device merely scan for signals.
The BMD-350-EVAL contains two 56K clocks, one designated for the Core controller and the other for the MAC controller. This is done to ensure maximum flexibility when dealing with various types of signals. The MAC controller clock is further divided into 4 sub-clocks: 2.4GHz, 5GHz, Sub-GHz and FSK/GFSK. This will allow for more precise operation and lower power consumption.
The board also contains a Cortex M4 MCU for specifically managing the various communications protocols supported by the chip. It contains up to 5MB of flash memory, which can be used to save program parameters, such as Bluetooth GATT profiles, 802.11 connection parameters, security keys, and application data.
The main SIP8 socket contains a MMBT2222 transistor, a BNA20 inductor, and a PLL capacitor. These components are used to adjust the chip’s gain in order to ensure optimally balanced signal gain. The sub SIP8 socket contains a MAX1472 driver, which provides additional gain and swing for higher output power.
The BMD-350-EVAL contains additional features such as a standard ISM antenna, which is dedicated for 2.4GHz capabilities, and a high-gain antenna for Sub-GHz and FSK/GFSK capabilities. There are also two SMA connectors for external antenna connections. The board also comes with a UART port, allowing for serial communication between the board and a host device. Additionally, two SPI pins, two I2C pins, and 8 PIOs (programmable IO pins) are also provided.
The BMD-350-EVAL is an excellent choice for quickly prototyping and testing your BMD-350-based applications. With its comprehensive set of features and easy-to-use development platform, it is ideally suited for all types of applications. Whether you\'re designing a mesh network or developing a Bluetooth-enabled device, the BMD-350-EVAL platform has you covered.
