BQ2084DBT-V140 Application Field and Working Principle
The BQ2084DBT-V140 is a special type of battery management System-on-Chip (BMS) designed by Texas Instruments for Smart Battery applications. It integrates a complete power monitoring and control system for 3-cell Lithium-ion/Polymer battery packs. The BQ2084DBT-V140 includes voltage, current, temperature and depth-of-discharge (DOD) monitoring, as well as a recharge algorithm, a programmable over-temperature protection circuit, and a configurable charge termination circuit. Additionally, this chip can manage state-of-charge (SOC) reporting, datalogging, cell balancing, cell balancing and charge sharing. This chip is a fully-integrated and cost-effective solution for applications that require power and energy management capabilities, such as portable medical, automotive, and other consumer electronics.
The BQ2084DBT-V140 contains two input channels for battery over-voltage protection (BOP) circuits and two output channels that can configure to drive the external switches for battery discharge FETs. It supports 3-cell LiFePO4, Li-Ion and Li-Polymer cells in series configuration, and the battery pack fully-improved from a total of 1100mAh to 2000mAh at 3.2V. Additionally, it provides a low power operation mode, analog battery discharge and recharge current monitor, 5V-compatible Host Interface, a programmable charge capability, configurable hysteretic current limit, and a temperature monitor.
The programmable charge/discharge algorithms of this battery management system make it suitable for a wide range of applications including industrial and medical systems, ground transportation and off-site operations. The charge algorithm enables over-temperature (OT) protection, over-discharge (OD) protection, and rapid-charge capability. The rapid-charge feature, which can deliver up to 3A of instantaneous current, allows for a fast charge-up period for high safety and continuous operation of the equipment.
The BQ2084DBT-V140 also provides a fully-programmable digital overload protection circuit, with adjustable current limit, and programmable over-temperature protection. The battery pack can be protected from over-voltage conditions and from excessive power dissipation by the use of a low voltage battery monitoring system. Additionally, the chip supports the use of two configurable power switches for powering up and shutting down the battery pack.
The BQ2084DBT-V140 also provides protection against over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature conditions. In addition, it provides a safety register that can be programmed to detect fault conditions and issue alerts or system shutdowns. It also offers an optional analog output that supports battery pack current and voltage monitoring.
