Application Field

BQ2084DBTR is a battery monitoring device that, due to its rich features and high precision, is suitable for applications where battery life and battery management accuracy are important factors. It includes a charger/gauge controller integrated with 9 selectable battery packs, making it ideal for applications such as medical, portable instrumentation, computer, and battery-operated equipment.

BQ2084DBTR monitors and controls the charge level, and indicates when the battery is running low. It can manage up to four charging modes for both Li-ion and Li-polymer batteries, making it ideal for applications that require multiple charging modes such as standalone and notebook PCs. Additional features such as thermal control, Hybrid dT/dV detection, integrated voltage and temperature monitoring, and user application control, also enhance its capabilities and make it suitable for a wide range of applications.

Working Principle

BQ2084DBTR works in four modes: active, low-power sleep, shutdown, and power-off modes. In active mode, it is constantly monitoring and analyzing information like cell temperature, cell voltage and resistor sense of the battery. In low-power sleep mode it can manage the discharge of the battery while in shutdown mode it stops charging when the battery is fully charged. In power-off mode, it stops all of its operations except for monitoring the battery temperature and voltage.

The working principle of BQ2084DBTR is based on a power path management system, which consists of a power supply, a battery charger, a power path controller and a voltage sensor. The power supply supplies power to the battery charger, while the power path controller regulates the current between the battery charger and battery. The battery charger charges the battery according to the voltage and current settings, while the power path controller monitors the battery voltage, current and temperature, and adjusts the charging parameters accordingly. Finally, the voltage sensor monitors the battery voltage, and can be used to trigger charging when the voltage drops too low.
