The BQ29700EVM-610 is an Evaluation and Demonstration Board and Kit from Texas Instruments (TI) designed to support the BQ29700 programmable protected cell fuel gauge. Evaluating and demonstrating the performance and features of this device are made much easier with the BQ29700EVM-610. In this article, we will explore the application fields and working principles of the BQ29700EVM-610.The BQ29700EVM-610 supports the BQ29700, a protected cell fuel gauge for accurate state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) monitoring. It features a 12-bit ADC that can measure impedance for internal cell tests, with 32-bit calculations for SOC and SOH estimations. The BQ29700EVM-610 provides evaluation, configuration, calibration, data streaming, and troubleshooting of the BQ29700, all of which can be tested in both real-time conditions and in simulation. The BQ29700EVM-610 evaluation kit is designed to simulate up to eight Li-Ion cells in a multi-cell environment, allowing users to easily evaluate the BQ29700 fuel gauge in real-life conditions and develop various application solutions. It includes the power board, which provides an unregulated 16V DC back-up power supply, a stepper motor interfaced with the BQ29700EVM-610, and an intuitive user GUI. The BQ29700EVM-610 can be used to evaluate the performance and features of the BQ29700 fuel gauge, such as self-discharge and state-of-health monitoring, linearity, accuracy, average power-on reset (POR), reverse current protection, over/under voltage protection, and cell-balancing. Additionally, the BQ29700EVM-610 is designed with calibration features that help the user fine-tune the performance of the fuel gauge. The working principle of the BQ29700EVM-610 is simple. It utilizes a stepper motor connected to a load resistor to simulate the discharge characteristics of up to eight Li-Ion cells. The BQ29700 fuel gauge is placed alongside the load resistor and it measures voltage and current across the resistor to calculate the SOC and SOH levels for each simulated cell.
