Panel Indicators, Pilot Lights
A C94-NWR120-NRO is one of various panel indicators and pilot lights used to indicate device status on electrical control panels. also referred to as a pilot light, these lights are typically designed to be either illuminated or off, or to indicate a state between the two. They come in two types: incandescent (traditional filament bulbs) and LED (light emitting diode). These are usually small bulbs or lights electrically connected to an enclosure that can be used to quickly convey the condition of a device or component to an operator.
Applications
Panel indicators and pilot lights serve a variety of applications within industrial and commercial settings. Illuminating lights are commonly used for the following:
- Motorized equipment status
- Warning of high temperatures
- Ground fault conditions
- Power failure (emergency lighting)
- Flow or pressure imbalances
- Machine overloads
- Fire/smoke alarm indicators
Because they are so versatile, panel indicators and pilot lights are essential components of automation control panels and safety systems. These devices can also provide visual feedback for diagnostics, events, and process adjustments.
Working Principle
The basic working principle of panel indicators and pilot lights is the same regardless of type. They are connected to a power source via a conductive material. When power is applied, a device such as a resistor, capacitor or semiconductor generates light or heat in order to detect either the presence or absence of electricity.
Incandescent-type panel indicators and pilot lights are designed to work when a switch or resistor is wired in series with the lamp. When electricity is present, current flows through the switch and resistor, creating heat that illuminates the bulb. LED panel indicators and pilot lights work in a similar fashion. Instead of heat, electrical current flows through a semiconductor (usually inside of the bulb) that emits light.
Many C94-NWR120-NRO panel indicators and pilot lights are designed with dual capabilities, which means they can be used to indicate two different readings or states. This is done by wiring the lights in parallel with two separate resistors or switches, each controlling its own set of LEDs.
